Witte Burg - Nature

The nature reserve Witte Burg in Oostduinkerke is a small but striking dune area and forms an extension of the well-known Doornpanne. With its open sandy slopes, special mosses and peaceful walking opportunities, this is a lovely place for anyone who wants to enjoy nature for a while, away from the bustle of the beach and the seafront.

What can you expect at Witte Burg?

• Small but special dune area: Witte Burg covers about 15 hectares and is part of the same landscape as the Doornpanne, one of the valuable dune areas of the West Coast.
• Drifting dune: The eye-catcher is the 21-metre-high Witte Burg, a drifting dune with a steep, bare sandy slope that clearly rises above the surrounding area.
• Special nature up close: Along the way, look out for Duinsterretjesmos. When it rains, this moss turns a striking fresh green, while in dry weather it looks brown and withered. As soon as moisture returns, it visibly comes back to life.
• A name with a story: Originally, the area was called Witte Buik, referring to the large, pale sand mass. Later, this name was changed to the more refined-sounding Witte Burg.
• Great for a short nature walk: Because of its limited size, this area is very suitable for a short walk, possibly as part of a longer route towards the Doornpanne or the dunes of Oostduinkerke.

• Free access: The area is public land and free to visit.
• Starting point: A good place to start is the car park at Witte Burg.

Witte Burg may be small in size, but thanks to the high drifting dune, the open sandy slopes and the special dune nature, it is a surprisingly beautiful natural spot in Oostduinkerke.
