Dune Marchand - Nature

The nature reserve Dune Marchand is located in northern France, between Bray-Dunes and Zuydcoote, close to the Belgian seaside resort of De Panne.

What can you expect at Dune Marchand?

• National nature reserve: Dune Marchand is a protected nature area and forms a valuable part of the dune landscape along the French North Sea coast. The area was classified as a nature reserve in 1974.
• Special dune landscape: Wind, sea and storms constantly change the landscape. Damp dune slacks form between the dunes, providing a habitat for special plants and animals.
• Rich flora and fauna: The area is home to dune grasses, orchids, grass-of-Parnassus, gentians and wintergreen, among other plants. Many birds, amphibians and mammals also live here, including the great crested newt, natterjack toad and sometimes even the common seal.
• Part of the Dunes de Flandre: Since 2025, the area has been part of the Grand Site des Dunes de Flandre, a protected dune landscape along the coast between Dunkirk and the Belgian border. This landscape connects beautifully with the nature reserve De Westhoek near De Panne.
• Lovely walking area: Dune Marchand is especially interesting for walkers, nature lovers, birdwatchers and those seeking peace and quiet. It is a pleasant place to discover the French dunes in a relaxed way.

• Starting point: A good starting point for a walk is the car park Wattrelos near Zuydcoote.
