Dune Dewulf - Nature

The nature reserve Dune Dewulf is located in northern France, close to the Belgian seaside resort of De Panne and a short distance from Dunkirk.

What can you expect at Dune Dewulf?

• Extensive dune area: Dune Dewulf covers almost 300 hectares and is spread across the French municipalities of Leffrinckoucke, Zuydcoote and Ghyvelde.
• Rich nature: The area is especially valuable for plants and animals. It is home to dozens of breeding bird species and hundreds of plant species, including special dune plants such as grass-of-Parnassus and dune pansy.
• Dry dunes and damp dune slacks: During a walk, you will see different dune landscapes within a short distance of each other. Open sand, marram grass, scrub and wet dune valleys alternate throughout the area.
• Military history: In and around the area, you can still find traces of its military past. Near the entrance is the Fort des Dunes, a former military fort in the dunes near Leffrinckoucke.
• Part of the Grand Site des Dunes de Flandre: Since 2025, this extensive dune area has been part of the Grand Site des Dunes de Flandre. This protected dune landscape stretches along the French North Sea coast between Dunkirk and the Belgian border, connecting with the nature reserve De Westhoek near De Panne.

Anyone travelling from De Panne or the Belgian West Coast who would like to cross the border will find a surprisingly peaceful and natural dune area at Dune Dewulf. It is a pleasant place for walkers, nature lovers and anyone who wants to discover the French dunes in a relaxed way.
