Houtsaegerduinen - Nature

The Houtsaegerduinen nature area is a quiet and surprisingly varied dune landscape, enclosed between De Panne and Sint-Idesbald. The area consists of small drifting dunes, moss dunes, dune grasslands, shrubs and young woodland.

What can you expect in the Houtsaegerduinen?

• Varied dune landscape: During a walk, you will come across open sandy patches, vegetated dunes, grasslands and sheltered paths between shrubs and trees.
• Donkeys in the dunes: A small herd of donkeys grazes here all year round. They keep the grass short and help prevent the area from becoming too overgrown.
• Flowers, shrubs and birds: In spring, flowers such as lesser celandine and wild bluebells come into bloom. Shrubs such as blackthorn, hawthorn, elder and wild privet provide flowers, berries and food for insects and birds.
• Remains of small dune fields: In some places, old small dune fields can still be recognised by their raised edges. They are a reminder of how this dune landscape was used in the past.
• Peaceful walking area: The Houtsaegerduinen are ideal for a short nature walk, away from the bustle of the beach and the promenade.

Practical information

• Access and parking: Entrances with parking facilities can be found, among other places, at Noorddreef and Fr. Beerlantlaan.
• Combine with: A visit can easily be combined with a walk through the adjoining Kerkepannebos.

The Houtsaegerduinen are a lovely place for anyone who wants to discover the quiet, green side of De Panne.
