Kerkepannebos - Nature

The Kerkepannebos is a small but atmospheric nature area between Koksijde and De Panne. The woodland covers around 6 hectares and connects to the Houtsaegerduinen nature reserve.
This makes it a lovely place for a short walk, but also a good starting point for a longer walk through woodland and dunes.
What can you expect in the Kerkepannebos?
- Small and peaceful nature area: The Kerkepannebos is compact and pleasantly quiet. Ideal for anyone who wants to leave behind the bustle of the beach, shops and coastal traffic for a while.
- A mix of woodland and dunes: The walking paths lead past deciduous trees, shrubs and open spaces. At the edge of the woodland, the landscape gradually changes into the Houtsaegerduinen, with open dune grasslands and dune valleys.
- Lovely place for a short walk: Thanks to its sheltered location, the woodland is a pleasant place to walk, especially on warm days. The shade from the trees often makes it cooler here than in the open dunes.
- Nature close to the coast: In spring and summer, you can hear many birds here, such as tits, blackbirds, robins and woodpeckers. Butterflies and other insects also benefit from the flowers and shrubs in and around the woodland.
- Green buffer near Sint-Idesbald: The Kerkepannebos forms a beautiful green transition between the built-up area and the protected dune nature. It is a reminder of the former dune landscape that was once much more extensive along this part of the Flemish coast.
Practical information
The Kerkepannebos is not a large nature area, but that is exactly what makes it so suitable for a relaxed short walk.
- Entrance and parking: A good access point to the area is the car park on Veurnestraat in De Panne. From here, you can easily walk towards the Kerkepannebos.
- Connection to the Houtsaegerduinen: Those who want to walk further can easily extend the route towards the larger dune area. It is precisely the transition from woodland to open dunes that makes this area surprisingly varied.
The Kerkepannebos is a surprisingly green little spot on the coast, where woodland, dunes and nature meet on a small scale.
Furthermore Kerkepannebos is near the following sights: Oosthoekduinen (±800 m), Houtsaegerduinen (±950 m), Blauwe Distelweg (±950 m), Museum Paul Delvaux (±1,1 km) & Art Centre Ten Bogaerde (±1,3 km).
