Dune du Perroquet - Nature

The nature reserve Dune du Perroquet is located near Bray-Dunes, just across the French border from the Belgian seaside resort of De Panne.

What can you expect at Dune du Perroquet?

This extensive dune area forms the northernmost part of France and connects with the Belgian nature reserve De Westhoek.

• Beautiful cross-border dune landscape: Dune du Perroquet covers approximately 179 hectares and consists of open dunes, dune slacks, scrub and dune grasslands directly along the North Sea coast.
• Rich nature: More than 350 plant species grow in the area, including sea holly, grass-of-Parnassus, sea rocket and common bird’s-foot trefoil. Dozens of bird species also breed here, and various amphibians live in the area.
• Bunkers in the dunes: During a walk, you will come across bunkers in several places. Some date from the Second World War and were part of the Atlantic Wall, while other defences were built earlier by the French as part of the Maginot Line.
• Part of the Grand Site des Dunes de Flandre: Since 2025, Dune du Perroquet has been part of this special dune area between Dunkirk and the Belgian border. The area is protected at European level as a Natura 2000 site.

Practical information

• Starting point: A good place to start is the car park on Duinhoekstraat in De Panne, on the French border. From here, you can walk straight towards the French dunes.
• Easy to combine with De Westhoek: On the Belgian side of the border, the area connects directly with the nature reserve De Westhoek. This makes it a wonderful place for cross-border walks through one of the most beautiful dune landscapes in the region.

Anyone who wants to cross the border from De Panne for a peaceful nature walk will find a beautiful and surprising stretch of French dune nature in Dune du Perroquet.
